Current Obsession … Fashion Documentaries
Y’all currently Bain and I are trying to figure out what to do with our TV. Now that we have Apple TV we aren’t watching TV the way were were just a few years ago. We’ve **gasp** gotten rid of DVR and use the apps from Apple more and more. I’m only telling you all this because last weekend it was raining *shocker* and I clicked onto Netflix to see what documentaries were interesting to me. I came across a few that I watched and thought if it should rain yet again and you are folding laundry, address Christmas cards… and more then you too might need a Netflix watching guide.
The first is IRIS – this is the story of interior designer, entrepreneur, fashion icon Iris Apfel. It is not only about her amazing collection of clothing and accessories but really, it is the woman behind the glasses. You will delight in the depth of her story.
OK – so in fairness I have a great appreciation for strong women before their time and Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel is a great continuation of a “woman-power” theme after watching IRIS.
Before there was Anna Wintor… there was Diana Vreeland. I have watched this documentary a few times now and each time learn something new about fashion and about her. She worked for Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. She was bold to say the least and her quotes are numerous. My favorite quote of hers is “Vogue always did stand for people’s lives. I mean, a new dress doesn’t get you anywhere; it’s the life you’re living in the dress, and the sort of life you had lived before, and what you will do in it later.”
Finally (although I have so many more that I love) Bill Cunningham, New York is a documentary cronicalling the lifelong career of Bill Cunningham of the New York Times and his stellar work taking pictures of stylish women/men on the streets of New York and at parties and realizing not only trends but the story behind the dress. A must see for anyone who loves fashion.
I love watching a documentary during the cold months. It is a special treat to me. Do you have a certain genre that is your favorite? Is there a doc that I need to watch ASAP?
I would love to know which you love….
